Anti-Kennedy
This cartoon did not really have a date of publication when i found it but it was created around the time Kennedy was president and it was created by Duncan MacPherson. The message of this cartoon was to tell the viewers that Kennedy is just trying thinking of his people and himself instead of worrying about the Canada and the United States' foreign relation. What Kennedy wanted to do was give Canada weapons of defense so that they could protect themselves and also protect the United States in the process. The cartoonist exagerated Kennedy's smile and hands so that the audience will see that he is being debious and selfish. It is not a flattering cartoon because Kennedy was highly viewed back then and this was a "side" of Kennedy that no one had ever seen before. The cartoonist used a horned gun on top of Prime Minister Lester Pearson's head to represent A-Arms (Weapons and ammunition) and a hat on his lapp to represent Conventional Weapons (not weapons of mass distruction). This cartoon appeals to the people that believed that Kennedy was not taking care of the country the right way and it might be offensive to people that actually supported Kennedy and thought that he was a great leader with good accomplishments. Kennedy was sometimes criticized for not being considerate of other countries when it came to safely and this cartoonist was not treating Kennedy fairly because President Kennedy took care of foreign relations very well especially around the time the Cuban Missile Crissis. Most of the cartoons that are published today about Kennedy are possitive and not negative like how they were back then. Of course there are still some that still have a negative view of Kennedy but not that many.
Pro-Kennedy
This cartoon did not have a publication date but it was created by Herbert Block and the message is that Former President Kennedy and Soviet Union's leader, Nikita Kruschev, are trying to hold back the beast of nuclear war. They are working together to try to prevent this terrible thing from escaping and causing distruction. Kennedy's hands are made a little bit bigger to represent the large amount of force he is using to try to stop the beast from getting out. It is a flattering cartoon but at the same time, it is not because Kennedy is working together with the leader of the Soviet Union to try to prevent tragedies from happening but at the same time, he cannot close the chest all the way. I think he was a great leader at this time for working together with another nation and trying to prevent the United States from being attacked. He cared for his people. The cartoonist used a large beast head and a chest labeled nuclear war to represent the violence and distruction that the war would bring to the people of the United States and nations all around. This cartoon might appeal to people that are greatful that a nuclear war was stoped before it started. This cartoon might offend people that remember that time of despiration and sadness as something extremely frightful. Sompe people might just want to forget about this horrible time the United States and Soviet Union had to go through many years ago. I feel like this cartoon is being fair with Kennedy because it is positive and Kennedy did try to work with the Soviet Union to stop a nuclear war. He was a great leader during that horrible time.
