Anti-Lincoln
The cartoon above was published on November 1, 1861 and it was most like created by an african slave. The cartoon's message to the viewers was to make them think of Lincoln as an uncaring and selfish man. The cartoon is making Lincoln look like he is about to drown a black man so that he (Lincoln) can survive the horrible waves. Lincoln's hands and hair are emphasized to represent wildness and violence. It is not a flattering caricature because it does not represent Lincoln as the calm and peaceful man many viewed him as. It shows him as an uncaring man that is willing to do anything just too survive the violent waves of distruction. Abraham Lincoln is trying to keep himself afloat by using the Union but in the process bringing down a black man. The cartoonist used a black man to represent the slave population, a flag that represent a Proclamation, a document that represents the Fremont Proclamation and a life saving floatie that represents the Union. This cartoon appeals to Southerners because it represents Abraham Lincoln's "failure" to defend the african american slaves. The south wanted Lincoln to fail because they wanted slavery so to see him fail gave them motivation to continue to push slavery.
The cartoon above was published on February 1, 1862 and it was most likely made by a northerner. The message that it is trying to send its viewers is that Lincoln is not listening to slavery asking for attention. Abraham Lincoln is petting the white sheep and is giving it the most attention while the black sheep is calling out to him. There is not anything really exagerated about Lincoln in this cartoon but his facial expression represents worry. This cartoon is not flattering because it displays Lincoln as unattentive and uncaring of the slave population. Slaves must of felt, at times, like they were not being heard and were being ignored. The cartoonist made a black sheep represent slavery, the white sheep represents the white population and Abraham Lincoln represents himself. This cartoon appeals to the south because it shows Lincoln ignoring slavery which is exactly what the south wanted because they favored slavery. This cartoon might offend people from the north because they trust Lincoln and his plan for the future.
Pro-Lincoln
The cartoon above was published on December 1, 1864 and it was created by a northerner. The cartoon's message is that the majority supports Lincoln and will be there for him through the touch problems when he needs help. The majority is trying to get Lincoln to the White House though the hard waters. Lincoln was drawn smaller compared to the man representing the majority. He is on top of the majority's shoulder. This cartoon is flattering because it represents the care and support that the majority had for Lincoln even through his hard times while trying to get to the White House. There are a lot of symbols in this cartoon. The giant represents the majority, an alpaca (can't tell exactly) represents peace, the piece of wood represents the army and there is a small ancor attached to the majority's belt. The ancor means that it is trying to hold down the majority but it stands no chance agaisnt he majority. This cartoon appealed to the north because it represented the support that they had for Abraham Lincoln. It might of offended the minority group because they are depicted as mean and evil.
The cartoon above was published on May 1, 1862 and it was drawned by a northern because it was made to let the audience know that Abraham Lincoln came out victorious in the fight with the south. Lincoln was drawn as a tall man and tired man. It is a flattering cartoon because it shows Lincoln being victorious and overcoming the horrible battle. Lincoln is fighting a war that he is sure to win. Lincoln is holding up the U.S Constitution while soldiers in the background fight against demons. There are also ballarinas that represent victory and peace. They are a positive symbol that is over powering the darkness. This cartoon appeals to the north because it is showing the good defeating the evil and wicked. It could offend the south because they are drawn as demons of evil and distruction.
2. Lincoln was criticized for defending tha black population because he was a white man. HE worked so hard to pass the 13th Amendment that he had to go against many people that eventually became his enemies. The cartoonists or the Anti-Lincoln cartoons did not treat Lincoln fairly because he tried his best to defend his beliefs and alot of people did not like that because it was not what they believed. The cartoonists of the Pro-Lincoln cartoons were fair to Lincoln because they drew him as a good leader that stood up for slavey. Those cartoons differ from modern day cartoons by what they represent. Abraham Lincoln is looked at today as a great leader af the people and there are not really a lot of negative views on him so today's cartoons are mostly of the great accomplishments that he had. They emphasize the good and not so much the bad.
